The largest water defence structure in France, with 1.2 billion m3 of water, is fed on the Hautes Alpes side by the Durance, and the Alpes de Haute Provence side by the Ubaye. It reaches 780 m altitude when it is at its highest and covers 2800 hectares (as large as Lake Annecy). Lake Serre Ponçon is a hot spot for tourism with shiny blue waters which change colour depending on the season. The many viewpoints are accessible by car, foot or bike.
